What to Expect During First Appointment at Prime Vascular Care

Most patients arrive at their first vascular appointment unsure of what the visit will involve. At Prime Vascular Care, the process is straightforward and designed to give you answers on the same day.

You will begin with a brief intake review covering your symptoms, medical history and any prior imaging or test results you bring with you. From there, you move directly into a duplex ultrasound evaluation, completed in-office without the need for a separate imaging appointment. The scan maps blood flow through the affected veins or arteries in real time and takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area being assessed.

Dr. Akinrinlola reviews the imaging personally and sits with you to explain what the scan shows. By the end of the appointment, you will have a clear understanding of your diagnosis and a specific treatment recommendation, not a referral to schedule further tests elsewhere.

Condition-Specific Treatments at Prime Vascular Care

We provide specialized vascular care with individualized treatment plans designed to support your vascular health at every stage.

Treating the Source, Not the Surface

Varicose veins produce symptoms that extend well beyond appearance. Persistent leg aching, swelling that builds through the day and a heaviness that limits normal activity are among the most common complaints from patients who come to us. Our varicose vein surgeon uses duplex ultrasound to identify which veins are failing at the valve level, then addresses them directly using minimally invasive techniques performed in-office under local anesthesia. We also provide structured guidance on varicose vein prevention so patients understand the factors that contribute to recurrence.

Recovery is typically measured in days rather than weeks, and most patients notice meaningful symptom relief soon after treatment.

Protecting Limb Function Through Timely Intervention

Peripheral artery disease progresses quietly. Leg cramping during walking, unusual fatigue in the lower limbs and wounds on the feet or ankles that are slow to heal are frequently dismissed as unrelated complaints, allowing arterial narrowing to advance without treatment. Our board-certified vascular surgeon evaluates PAD through ankle-brachial index testing and detailed arterial imaging, then develops a management plan that addresses both immediate circulation and long-term limb health.

For patients with advanced disease, our limb-preservation approach prioritizes restoring blood flow before irreversible damage occurs.

Reliable Access That Supports Every Treatment Session

For patients on hemodialysis, vascular access is not a secondary concern. It is what makes treatment possible. Prime Vascular Care specializes in AV fistula and graft placement, along with prompt intervention when access is threatened by clotting or flow disruption. We maintain active coordination with nephrology and dialysis teams throughout the patient’s care to prevent gaps between appointments from becoming access failures.

Early detection through patient education and scheduled monitoring helps sustain access function over the long term.

Structured Management from Detection Through Recovery

Deep vein thrombosis requires prompt, specialist-level evaluation. The risk of pulmonary embolism makes accurate assessment of clot size, location and extent a critical first step before any treatment decision is made. Our surgeon develops an evidence-based management plan and monitors recovery closely to reduce the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome and long-term venous damage.

Patients leave each appointment understanding their status, what to watch for and how to protect their vascular health through recovery.

Why Alexandria Patients Choose Prime Vascular Care

track

Accessible Specialist Care Across Northern Virginia

Prime Vascular Care accepts a range of insurance plans and works to make specialist vascular care reachable for patients across Northern Virginia. Both our Sterling and Woodbridge locations are available for new patient appointments, and no referral is required to schedule a consultation.

track (2)

Accountability That Extends Beyond the Procedure

Dialysis access is tracked across sessions to prevent failures that would interrupt treatment. Outcomes are documented and shared with referring physicians, not summarized in a single discharge note. Gaps in communication are where complications go undetected, and we treat that as a clinical responsibility.

Follow-Up Built Into Every Treatment Plan

For patients managing chronic vascular conditions, the difference between a practice that treats and discharges and one that monitors and adjusts is significant. At Prime Vascular Care, follow-up is not optional. It is structured into every care plan from the first appointment forward.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Do I need a referral or existing diagnosis to be seen?

No referral or prior diagnosis is required. Unexplained leg pain, ankle swelling, surface vein changes or a wound that is slow to heal are all valid reasons to book a consultation.

Treated veins will not reopen. New veins can develop over time due to factors such as prolonged standing, genetics or hormonal changes. Follow-up ultrasounds are scheduled to catch any new activity early.

Leg pain during walking, persistent ankle swelling, a non-healing wound on the lower leg or foot or a visible vein change are all reasons to seek evaluation. Earlier assessment means more treatment options and better outcomes.

More common than most expect. Peripheral artery disease is frequently misattributed to joint pain or normal aging, leaving many patients undiagnosed for years despite manageable treatment options being available.

Prime Vascular Care has two Northern Virginia locations in Sterling and Woodbridge. The Sterling location is approximately 32.8 miles from Alexandria, around 42 minutes via I-495 W and VA-7 W/Leesburg Pike with tolls on this route. Patients from Woodbridge and Prince William County can visit the Woodbridge clinic directly.
