Carotid Artery Disease Treatment in Virginia

Carotid arteries are major blood vessels on each side of your neck that supply blood to your brain. Carotid artery disease occurs when these vessels become narrowed or blocked due to atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque made of fat, cholesterol and other substances. This reduces blood flow to your brain and increases your stroke risk. At Prime Vascular Care, we specialize in diagnosing and treating carotid artery disease to prevent strokes and protect your brain health.

What Causes Carotid Artery Disease?

Carotid artery disease develops when fatty deposits (called plaque) build up inside the arteries on both sides of your neck that carry blood to your brain. This narrowing (known as stenosis) reduces blood flow and increases stroke risk. The condition often progresses silently for years, making early detection crucial.

Risk factors include:

Smoking and high blood pressure

High cholesterol and diabetes

Family history of vascular disease

Obesity and sedentary lifestyle

Age (greater risk over age 60)

Previous stroke or mini-stroke (TIA)

How We Diagnose Carotid Artery Disease

At Prime Vascular Care, diagnosis begins with a comprehensive vascular evaluation to accurately assess the extent of plaque buildup and determine the best treatment approach for your specific condition.

Our diagnostic methods include:

Carotid Duplex Ultrasound: Non-invasive test to measure blood flow and plaque buildup

CT or MR Angiography: Advanced imaging for detailed assessment

Physical Exam: Listening for a "bruit," an abnormal sound over the artery

Complete evaluation of your symptoms and risk factors

How We Diagnose Carotid Artery Disease

Signs and Symptoms of Carotid Artery Disease

Most people with carotid artery disease have no warning signs until the condition becomes advanced. Sometimes, the first sign is a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a “mini-stroke.” Recognizing these symptoms and acting quickly can save brain function and lives.

Risk factors include:

Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body

Trouble speaking or understanding speech

Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes

Dizziness, loss of balance, or confusion

Severe sudden headache

Our Treatment Approach for Carotid Artery Disease

Medical Management and Lifestyle Changes

The foundation of carotid artery disease treatment focuses on preventing stroke through lifestyle modifications and medications. This approach is often effective for managing early-stage disease and reducing overall cardiovascular risk.

Lifestyle changes: quitting smoking, heart-healthy diet, regular exercise

image (11)

Cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) and blood pressure control

image (11)

Antiplatelet therapy (aspirin or clopidogrel) to prevent clots

image (11)

Regular monitoring with ultrasound to track progression

Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA)

For patients with significant narrowing (usually over 70%) or symptoms, surgical removal of plaque from the carotid artery can effectively restore blood flow and reduce stroke risk.

Direct surgical removal of plaque buildup

Recommended for significant narrowing with symptoms

Proven long-term results for stroke prevention

Performed through small neck incision

Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS)

This minimally invasive option places a small stent inside the artery to keep it open. It’s often recommended for patients who may be at higher risk for traditional surgery.

Minimally invasive with smaller incision

Stent keeps artery open and improves blood flow

Good option for high-risk surgical patients

Shorter recovery time compared to open surgery

Frequently Asked Questions?

How do I know if I have carotid artery disease?

Most people have no symptoms until the disease is advanced. The first sign is often a stroke or TIA (mini-stroke). We can detect it early with a simple, painless ultrasound test, especially if you have risk factors like smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

A TIA (transient ischemic attack) causes stroke-like symptoms that go away within minutes or hours, while a stroke causes permanent brain damage. Both are medical emergencies – call 911 immediately. A TIA is often a warning that a major stroke could happen soon.

Not necessarily. Many patients are successfully managed with medications, lifestyle changes and monitoring. Surgery is typically recommended when the artery is severely narrowed (over 70%) or if you’ve had symptoms like a TIA or stroke.

Most patients go home the next day after carotid endarterectomy. You’ll have activity restrictions for about two weeks, but most people return to normal activities within a month. Stenting procedures have even shorter recovery times.

We’ll monitor you with ultrasounds every 6-12 months initially, then annually if everything looks stable. You’ll also need ongoing management of risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol to prevent the disease from progressing.
