Peripheral Arterial Disease Treatment in Virginia

If you’re experiencing leg pain while walking, you might have Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) – a circulation problem where narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to your legs. PAD not only affects your mobility but also increases your risk for heart attack and stroke. We provide expert PAD treatment in Virginia with fast diagnostics, proven care and same or next-day appointments to restore your circulation and get you moving again.

What Causes Peripheral Arterial Disease

PAD develops when fatty deposits (also known as plaque) build up inside the arteries in a condition known as atherosclerosis. This buildup reduces blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles and tissues. We use advanced detection to create tailored treatment plans that restore function and prevent serious complications.

Risk factors include:

Smoking (biggest preventable risk)

Diabetes and high blood pressure

High cholesterol

Family history of vascular disease

Obesity and sedentary lifestyle

Age (risk increases after 50)

Signs and Symptoms of Peripheral Arterial Disease

Many people with PAD have no symptoms, but early detection and treatment can prevent serious complications. When symptoms occur, prompt care helps you walk farther and maintain your independence. You’re a candidate for treatment if you experience:

Leg pain or cramping with walking that improves with rest

Numbness or weakness in the legs

Coldness in one leg compared to the other

Poor healing wounds or ulcers on feet or toes

Shiny skin, hair loss, or thickened toenails

In severe cases, rest pain (leg pain at night or when lying down)

How We Diagnose Peripheral Arterial Disease

At Prime Vascular Care, diagnosis starts with a thorough medical history, physical exam and advanced vascular testing to accurately identify blockages and create your personalized treatment plan. Our diagnostic approach may include:

  • Ankle-Brachial Index: A simple, painless test comparing blood pressure in arms and ankles
  • Vascular Ultrasound: To assess blood flow and detect blockages
  • CT or MR Angiography: For detailed imaging in complex cases

Diagnosis & Risk Assessment

We begin with comprehensive testing including ABI and duplex ultrasound to identify arterial blockages and assess circulation throughout your legs. Frequently Asked Questions?

How do I know if my leg pain is PAD or something else?

If your legs hurt when you’re walking but feel better when you stop to rest, that’s a key sign of PAD. It’s different from other leg pain that might bother you all the time or first thing in the morning. You might also notice one leg feeling colder than the other, or cuts on your feet taking longer to heal. If this sounds familiar, it’s definitely worth having it checked out.

Not at all – it’s actually pretty simple. We just check your blood pressure the normal way, but we’ll also check it at your ankles. It feels exactly like a regular blood pressure check and takes maybe 10-15 minutes. The best part is you’ll know your results right away, so we can talk about what they mean and what your options are.

Most of our patients don’t need surgery right off the bat. We usually start with things like walking programs, medications and helping you with lifestyle changes that can make a real difference. If we do need to do a procedure, many of them are pretty minimally invasive – you can often go home the same day. We only consider surgery for the more serious cases.

Absolutely, and it’s actually one of the best things you can do for yourself. We know it might seem scary to exercise when walking hurts, but we’ll work with you to create a program that gradually builds up your stamina. Most of our patients are amazed at how much farther they can walk after a few months in our exercise program.

Everyone’s different, but many patients start feeling somewhat better within a month or two of starting medications and making lifestyle changes. If you need a procedure, you might feel relief pretty quickly – sometimes within just a few days. The exercise therapy takes a bit more patience, but most people see real progress after about 2-3 months of sticking with it.
